What is a fidget toy?

Fidget toys are small toys in materials such as soft plastic and stainless steel. They can keep your hands busy, for example, if you have difficulty concentrating or sitting still. Many children constantly wiggle their feet, bite their pencils or twirl their hair, and these toys are dedicated to providing an outlet to minimise these behaviours. They are, of course, great for children as well as adults. The different parts of the toys are easy to move, even if you are not looking at them. Therefore, they are ideal for anyone who needs something to tinker with. For example, some students find them very useful when attending classes. Others like to use them when they watch a film or do other activities.

Fidget spinners

Fidget spinners are probably the most well-known type of fidget toy. It consists of a piece of plastic, usually in three "prongs", around a ball bearing so you can easily hold the spinner in one hand and spin it. You can also do various tricks with fidget spinners. They rotate when held between two fingers, but you can also place them on flat surfaces like a desk. The ball bearing keeps the spinner in motion for a long time. Many people experience that fidget spinners can help reduce restlessness and increase concentration since the hands are occupied. It makes it easier for the mind to relax when it can focus on something. In turn, the body will be relaxed too.

Pop-it

Pop-its are a newer form of fidget toy made of a soft plastic/silicone. Here, there are small "bubbles" in a frame that you can "pop", so they come out on the other side. Then you turn your pop-it over to start all over again. These fidget toys are perfect because your eyes can easily concentrate on something and your mind has a fixed focus. If you or your child tend to be restless, sensory and fidget toys like these can help keep you calm, and your mind focused. These are especially practical for smaller children and can easily be washed with soap and water.

Other fidget toys

There are many types of sensory and fidget toys. Maybe you are familiar with the little cubes with different coloured, rotating boxes on all sides. These classic toys are discreet, so you can sit with them in meetings and other places whenever you need to find your centre or focus your mind.

Fidget toys for ADHD

Some people believe that these toys can be helpful for children with ADHD. This is because they are good at keeping children calm as they have a specific focal point on which to concentrate.
