Genuine vegetable-tanned grain leather
Our bat chairs are supplied in the best quality grain leather. Grain leather is a raw and natural form of leather that is often used for modern and classic furniture. The core leather is vegetable-tanned, which is far more sustainable and has not been subsequently treated or dyed. This gives the leather a high quality and ensures that the leather acquires a luxurious patina over time.
The story behind the butterfly chair
The original butterfly chair design is one of the 20th century’s greatest design successes and is popular today in Danish homes and homes in many other countries. The chair was designed in Argentina in the 1930s, inspired by a relatively anonymous folding wooden chair used by the British military and rumored to have probably inspired the long chair called the “Egg” that Arne Jacobsen designed in 1958. In fact, Arne Jacobsen had a version of the butterfly chair in his summer house.
The butterfly chair won several design awards and the director of the Museum of Art in New York bought 2 of the original chairs, and they can still be seen on display in the museum to this day.
Over time, the chair has had many different nicknames. At first it was called BKF and later called Butterfly and Bat Chair.
