When the oven or BBQ, is heated, place the grill mat on the grate, and the mat will prevent meat juices and other food residue from sticking to the grate. It is of course important that the grill mats do not come in direct contact with fire. You should also avoid twisting the grill mats too much if you wash them by hand. The grill/BBQ mats are easy to clean and can also be washed in the dishwasher.

If the grill mats are too big for your oven or grill, you can easily cut the mats with scissors so they will fit.
